35-100mm Focal Range for Portraits and Travel

At 35mm, the lens provides a wider perspective that can include more of the surrounding environment. This makes it useful for environmental portraits, travel photography and everyday scenes.

Moving through 50mm and 85mm brings the lens into classic portrait territory, while the 100mm setting provides a tighter perspective for isolating subjects.

The result is a 35-100mm F2.8 full-frame zoom that can cover several commonly used focal lengths without requiring frequent lens changes.

Constant F2.8 Aperture

The A078 features a constant F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range.

A constant aperture allows photographers to maintain the same maximum aperture while changing focal lengths. It also provides greater flexibility when shooting in lower-light environments and helps create soft, natural-looking background blur.

For portrait photography, the combination of longer focal lengths and F2.8 aperture can help separate the subject from the background while maintaining detailed rendering of skin texture.

Compact and Lightweight Design

Portability is one of the defining characteristics of the A078.

The Sony E-mount version measures 119.2mm in length and weighs 565g, while the Nikon Z version measures 121.5mm and weighs 575g.

Despite maintaining a constant F2.8 aperture, TAMRON designed the lens to fit comfortably in the hand and remain practical for travel and everyday photography. The internal design also helps minimize barrel extension while zooming, which can contribute to a more balanced handling experience when shooting handheld or using a gimbal.

High Resolution and Smooth Bokeh

The optical design of the A078 consists of 15 elements in 13 groups, including one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), two LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements.

These elements help control various optical aberrations and maintain high resolving power across the zoom range.

The lens also uses TAMRON’s BBAR-G2 coating to help suppress ghosting and flare, supporting clear images in challenging lighting conditions.

Combined with its constant F2.8 aperture, the optical design is intended to produce detailed images with smooth, attractive bokeh for portrait photography.

Fast and Precise VXD Autofocus

The 35-100mm F2.8 A078 uses TAMRON’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism.

VXD is designed to provide fast and precise autofocus performance, helping photographers capture spontaneous expressions and unpredictable subject movement.

The autofocus system is also suitable for video, with quiet operation that can be beneficial when recording in environments where minimizing operational noise is important.

Close-Up Capability for Indoor Photography

The A078 can also focus relatively close to subjects, expanding its usefulness beyond traditional portrait photography.

At 35mm, the lens has a minimum object distance of 0.22m and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.3. At 100mm, the minimum object distance is 0.65m with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.9.

This close-focusing capability makes the lens useful for tabletop photography, food, small details and indoor subjects where photographers may want to work from a short distance.

Designed for Comfortable Everyday Shooting

TAMRON also refined the physical operation of the A078 for everyday use.

The lens features carefully tuned zoom and focus rings designed to provide smooth and consistent movement. The ergonomic design is intended to make the lens comfortable to operate during extended shooting sessions.

A 67mm filter diameter also allows photographers who already use other compatible TAMRON lenses to share filters between lenses, including commonly used PL and ND filters.

TAMRON Lens Utility Compatibility

The A078 is compatible with the TAMRON Lens Utility application, which allows photographers and videographers to customize supported lens functions.

The software can be used for compatible camera and lens settings, including functions useful for both still photography and video.

The lens also includes a USB Type-C connection for supported customization and firmware-update functions.

Sony E-Mount and Nikon Z Mount Compatibility

The 35-100mm F2.8 A078 is available for both Sony E-mount and Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Both versions launched on March 26, 2026, giving photographers on both systems access to the same 35-100mm focal range and constant F2.8 aperture.

The lens supports key camera functions including autofocus and Eye AF, although specific features can vary depending on the camera body and firmware.
